Matthew Lugo Reflects on Red Sox Past While Building Role With Royals

Matthew Lugo returned to Fenway Park on Saturday as a bench contributor for the Royals. Selected by Boston in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Lugo spent five seasons in the organization, highlighted by a strong 2024 stint at Double-A Portland where he hit 11 home runs with a 1.069 OPS in 43 games under manager Chad Epperson. After debuting with the Angels in 2025, Lugo has logged 38 big-league games and aims to carve out a permanent home in Kansas City.
