J.J. McCarthy Demoted to Third-String Quarterback

Following a difficult 2025 season, J.J. McCarthy has been demoted to third-string quarterback for the Vikings' Week 1 opener against the Packers. Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed that McCarthy has fallen behind starter Kyler Murray and primary backup Carson Wentz on the depth chart. This marks a significant shift for the former first-round pick, who previously served as the team's quarterback of the future.
