Mathew Barzal Scores Overtime Winner for Islanders After Late-Game Drama
Mathew Barzal was the hero for the New York Islanders, scoring the game-winning goal 1:17 into overtime against the New Jersey Devils. The dramatic 3-2 victory came after the Islanders surrendered a 2-1 lead with just 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation, when Simon Nemec's shot deflected off Jean-Gabriel Pageau to tie the game. Barzal's goal was set up by a give-and-go with Jonathan Drouin, beating Devils' goalie Jacob Markstrom glove side. This win followed a strong performance by Ilya Sorokin in net, who made 33 saves and has been electric in his last two starts, including a 5-0 shutout against the New York Rangers. Earlier, Bo Horvat tied the game at 1-1 in the second period with his sixth goal in six games, extending his point streak, and Kyle Palmieri scored a power-play goal in the third, assisted by Horvat for his 300th career assist. Mathew Schaefer also contributed with an assist, bringing his season total to 12 points in 16 games. The Islanders are continuing a seven-game road trip, with upcoming games against the Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Mammoth.
