Kyle Palmieri Reflects on Devils Trade, Islanders Success, and Championship Aspirations
Kyle Palmieri, now in his fifth full season with the New York Islanders, recently reflected on his 2021 trade from the New Jersey Devils. Ahead of the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline, Palmieri knew his future wasn't with the Devils, who were in a rebuild. He utilized his modified no-trade clause to help facilitate a move to the Islanders, citing their competitiveness and opportunity to win as primary motivators, despite being born on Long Island. The Islanders acquired Palmieri and Travis Zajac for A.J. Greer, Mason Jobst, a 2021 first-round pick, and a 2022 conditional fourth-round pick. Palmieri, who began his career with the Anaheim Ducks and signed with the Devils in 2016, has since proven tremendous value to the Islanders, overcoming early injury struggles. After two consecutive 82-game seasons, he signed a two-year, $4.75 million annual extension. This season, he has 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) in 15 games and is currently on the top line with Bo Horvat and Emil Heineman, preparing to face his former team, the Devils.
