John Tavares Honored by Maple Leafs for Historic 500-Goal, 500-Point Milestones
Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares is set to be honored ahead of Wednesday's game against the Utah Mammoth for his recent historic achievements. On October 29th, Tavares scored his 500th career goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a moment initially overshadowed by a 6-3 loss. He later expressed appreciation, calling it "special" and acknowledging the difficulty of each goal. Tavares is only the second player to reach 500 goals while playing for the Maple Leafs and one of 49 players in NHL history to hit the mark, with 228 goals for Toronto and 272 for the New York Islanders. Additionally, the 35-year-old veteran forward tallied his 500th point with his second team in October, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Ron Francis as the only players to achieve this. Teammates Matias Maccelli and Morgan Rielly praised Tavares, with Maccelli calling him a "future Hall of Famer" and Rielly highlighting his "incredible" commitment and drive as a role model.
