Semyon Varlamov Delivers 'Old Varly' Performance with 19 Saves in Shootout Loss
New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov delivered a strong, 'old Varly' performance with 19 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators. In his second start since two partial knee replacements, the 38-year-old looked markedly better, gaining command and making terrific saves, including robbing Stephen Halliday. Coach Pete DeBoer praised his return, noting the difficulty of coming back for a goalie. Despite two early goals against being overturned, Varlamov ensured a flawless penalty kill. The Islanders plan to give him about one start per week.
